JOLIET, Ill. - University of St. Francis ran into another very strong opponent Sunday and dropped a nonconference women's soccer match to Embry-Riddle (AZ) by a score of 3-0 at the Galowich YMCA Field.
Embry-Riddle (1-0-2), who received a vote in the NAIA national preseason poll, notched its first win of a three-game trip to the Chicago area after playing a pair of tie games against Olivet Nazarene and NAIA No. 7 Trinity Christian, a pair of USF Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foes.
The Saints (0-2) were looking to score their first goal of the season and bounce back from a tough 1-0 loss in Thursday's season-opener against NCAA Division II Concordia-St. Paul (MN).
USF was unable to accomplish either pregame wish. The Saints were limited to just five total shots and only two on goal. USF senior goalkeeper Ashley Kekelik (T.F. South H.S./Lansing, IL) was kept very busy at the other end of the field as she faced a total of 30 ERU shots and 19 of them were on goal. Kekelik produced an impressive number of 16 saves and kept the Saints within one goal of tying the match until ERU scored its second goal with less than 10 seconds remaining in the first half of play.
USF got two shots apiece from senior midfielder Caitlyn Byrnes (Plainfield South H.S./Joliet, IL) and freshman midfielder Amber Zukowski (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL). Both Byrnes and Zukowski had one shot on goal apiece. USF's other shot came off the foot of sophomore forward Erin Voss (Nazareth Academy/Elmhurst, IL).
USF is now off until Saturday (Sept. 5) when it travels to Indianapolis, Ind., for a nonconference match at Marian University.
