SILVIS, Ill. --- University of St. Francis played with most of the NAIA's finest teams on Thursday and Friday and finished at the bottom of the strong 17-team field at the NAIA Preview Invitational. The event was held at the TPC Deere Run Golf Course, site of the most recent (2009) and the upcoming (2010) NAIA Men's Golf Championships next spring.
The Saints fired a two-day total of 660, carding a score of 333 on Thursday and 327 on Friday. They finished 66 strokes back of first-place Oklahoma City. USF was the only Illinois school invited to play in the tourney. The Saints earned the invitation after participating in the NAIA Championships at TPC Deere Run last spring.
Sophomore Grant Whybark (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) led USF with a two-day total of 160. He shot an 83 on Thursday and improved by six strokes with a 77 on Friday. That was the lone sub-80 round by a USF player at the tournament.
Freshman Martin Hetelle (Seneca H.S./Seneca, IL) was right behind Whybark with a total of 163 after carding scores of 81 and 82. Senior Steve Sourigno (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) was next in line with a 165 (81-84) and junior Drew Anderson (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) posted a 172 (88-84). Sophomore Mike Mysker (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) rounded out the USF squad with a 174 (88-86).
The tourney concluded the fall portion of the Saints' 2009-10 season. USF will resume play during a spring break trip to Florida in early March.
