NEW LENOX, Ill. - After battling through seven weeks of mostly frustrating football, University of St. Francis finally found a way to have a little fun on Saturday night. The Saints (2-6, 1-3) tied a school record with 62 points as they ran away to a 62-20 Mid-States Football Association crossover victory over rival Olivet Nazarene University (2-6).
Senior quarterback John Goolsby (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) matched the USF single-game record with 4 touchdown passes and all of them came in the opening half. Goolsby also eclipsed his own school record for most touchdown passes in one season as the four vs. ONU moved him to 20, two more than the 18 he collected as a junior in 2008.
Goolsby split his scoring passes between seniors Ponce Palmer (Decatur McArthur H.S./Findley, IL) and Jason Fiske (Belvidere H.S./Loves Park, IL) who also happen to be the top two on the Saints' all-time list for touchdown receptions with 15 and 14, respectively. Palmer's scoring receptions covered 60 and 20 yards and he finished the evening with 5 grabs for 152 yards. Fiske's scores came from 10 and 24 yards out and he led all USF receivers with 8 catches for 96 yards. Fiske's 8 receptions added to his USF career-record total which now stands at 168. He also topped his own USF single-season receptions record, pushing his total to 66 which is 5 more than his standard of 61 set last season.
Goolsby, who left the game in the third quarter, finished the night with 16 completions in 32 attempts for 285 yards and no interceptions to go along with the 4 touchdown passes. He has thrown at least one touchdown pass in all eight games in 2009 and has thrown for 2 or more in seven of those eight outings.
The Saints were equally as impressive on the ground. Freshman tailback Mychal Jackson (Chicago Academy H.S./Chicago, IL) topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the second time in just his fourth collegiate game. He carried the ball 17 times for 110 yards and scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third quarter.
Fellow freshman Connor Krisch (Joliet Catholic Academy/Plainfield, IL) notched 83 yards on 16 carries before exiting the game early in the third period. He also scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run in the second quarter.
As a team, the Saints ran for 243 yards - their second-highest total of the season - on 41 carries and averaged just a tick below 6.0 yards per rush.
USF scored a total of 8 touchdowns on the night, and two will be memorable for a pair of Marian Catholic High School products.
Junior reserve defensive back Michael Woodward (Marian Catholic H.S./Crete, IL) picked off a pass in front of the USF bench midway through the second quarter and raced 35 yards down the sideline for his first collegiate touchdown and the Saints' first defensive points of the season.
Senior center Marc Novak (Marian Catholic H.S./St. John, IN), a four-year starter and a returning All-MSFA lineman and NAIA Scholar-Athlete, got the chance to live out a lineman's dream when USF coach Mike Uremovich inserted him into the backfield in the fourth quarter when the Saints had a first-and-goal opportunity at the Olivet Nazarene 3-yard line. Novak was handed the ball on first down and narrowly missed bulling his way into the end zone. Offensive coordinator Craig Harmon called his number again on second down and the 6-1, 300-pound senior captain pushed his way into the end zone for the Saints' final touchdown of the night.
In addition to Woodward's pick, the USF defense picked off three other ONU passes. Sophomore defensive back Wayne Johnson (York H.S./McConnells, SC) made a pair of picks and pushed his team-leading total on the season to 3. Junior Guy Dragonetti (Catholic Memorial H.S./Waukesha, WI) grabbed his first career interception, also in the second period. The four interceptions on the night were more than the Saints had (3) in the season's first seven games.
USF took a 3-0 lead on its first possession of the game on a 23-yard field goal by freshman placekicker Patrick Wright (Providence Catholic H.S./Lemont, IL). The Saints then proceeded to score touchdowns on their next six first-half possessions to open up a 45-0 lead. ONU got its first points in the final minute of the opening half to cut the lead to 45-7 at halftime.
The win snapped a two-game losing skein for the Saints and gave USF its second victory over Olivet Nazarene in the last three years.
USF has three games remaining, and all are MSFA/Midwest League contests. The Saints travel to Forest City, Iowa, next Saturday to play at Waldorf College (1 p.m.) and then go to Quincy for their final road game on Nov. 7. USF returns home on Nov. 14 to conclude the season against William Penn (IA) at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
