Senior quarterback John Goolsby (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) has been named the Mid-States Football Association/Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week sophomore defensive back Wayne Johnson (York H.S./McConnells, SC) was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week after the pair led USF to a convincing 62-20 win over Olivet Nazarene Saturday night in New Lenox.
Goolsby tied the USF single-game record with four touchdown passes. He threw all four of his scoring passes in the opening half as USF raced out to a 45-7 halftime lead over the Tigers. He finished the game with 16 completions in 32 attempts for 285 yards. He did not throw an interception for the second straight week.
In addition to tying the single-game mark for touchdown passes, Goolsby also broke his own USF single-season mark of 18 set last year. With the four scoring tosses against Olivet Nazarene, Goolsby pushed his 2009 total to 20. He also owns the USF career mark for touchdown passes with 44.
Johnson was honored after intercepting a pair of passes to push his team-leading total to four on the season. Johnson's two picks were part of four total in the game for USF, one more than the Saints had accumulated in the season's first seven games. Johnson also added 4 tackles and shared a tackle-for-loss in the big win.
Goolsby and Johonson are the third and fourth USF players to be honored this season by the MSFA. Running back Connor Krisch (Joliet Catholic Academy/Plainfield, IL) and punter-placekicker Patrick Wright (Providence Catholic H.S./Lemont, IL), a pair of freshmen, were named the offensive and special teams Players of the Week last month after leading USF to a 51-6 win at Iowa Wesleyan.
The Saints travel to Forest City, Iowa, Saturday for an MSFA/Midwest League game against Waldorf College. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
