GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- University of St. Francis got outscored by a combined 35 points in the second halves of its two games at the Davenport Panther Invitational this weekend, with Saturday's 67-53 loss to Kuyper College dropping the Saints to 1-2 in the new season.
After getting outscored 45-26 in the second half of Friday's 80-66 setback to Grace Bible, USF watched as its slim 2-point halftime lead turned into a double-digit deficit in the second half Saturday afternoon against Kuyper (2-1). The Saints shot just 30 percent from the floor for the game but managed just an 18.2 percent shooting mark in the second half (6-of-33).
The cold shooting resulted in USF being outscored 38-22 for the half.
Only two players were able to score in double figures for USF, with junior forward Greg Leavell (Schoolcraft College/Farmington Hills, MI) and sophomore reserve guard Robbie Butcher (Stagg H.S./Orland Park, IL) each notching 10 points. Butcher was one of just three Saints who hit more than half of his shot attempts as he finished the game 4-for-6 from the floor. Sophomore point guard Derek Ciezczak (Stagg H.S./Hickory Hills, IL) and junior forward Justin Richmond (Highland CC/Waukegan, IL) each made 2-of-3 field goal attempts.
The loss again denied USF veteran head coach Pat Sullivan an opportunity to collect his 500th career collegiate coaching victory. The Saints' next opportunity to get that milestone win for their coach will be Tuesday when they travel to Chicago to play East-West University.
