JACKSON, Tenn. -- This was one of those weekend splits that University of St. Francis coach Jeff Thompson can tolerate. The Saints dropped a 75-54 game at defending NAIA Division I champion and current No.1 Union (Tenn.) on Saturday. That loss, though, certainly does not diminish the Saints' upset of NAIA Division I No. 9 Lambuth (Tenn.) just 24 hours earlier in the first round of the Union Bulldog Classic.
The Saints (1-2) scored the first four points of the game but Union (3-0) then took over and slowly built a 14-point, 39-25 halftime lead. Union pushed the lead to as much as 28 points in the second half and never allowed the Saints to get closer than the 14-point halftime margin.
Senior point guard Anna Sears (Providence Catholic H.S./Mokena, IL) led the Saints in scoring for the third straight game as she finished the afternoon with 16 points. Senior forward/center Kaci Baird (Bartlett H.S./Bartlett, IL) added 12 points and senior guard Jacqie Storm (Sandburg H.S./Orland Park, IL) contributed 10.
Senior forward Kellie Fazio (Leyden H.S./Rosemont, IL) topped the club with 7 rebounds.
USF will play its home opener this coming Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. vs. Campbellsville (KY) at the Recreation Center. Campbellsville will be the fourth nationally-ranked team the Saints have played in their first four games. USF opened with a loss at NAIA Division II No. 20 St. Ambrose. The Saints played No. 9 Lambuth and No. 1 Union this weekend and Campbellsville is rated No. 11 in NAIA Division I.
