BOURBONNAIS -- University of St. Francis came out hot but could not keep the momentum of a first game win and lost the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament final to No. 12-ranked Olivet Nazarene in four games Friday night at McHie Arena.
USF (27-16) won a tight opening game by a 29-27 score after finally securing the game-winning point on its sixth try. Sophomore right-side attacker Sarah Ahline (Lemont H.S./Lemont, IL) keyed the Saints' first-game win with 6 kills.
Olivet Nazarene (34-8), the regular-season CCAC champion with a perfect 10-0 league record, took control of the match in games two and three and won those by scores of 25-17 and 25-16.
St. Francis, though, was not going to let ONU secure its fourth straight trip to the NAIA Championship tournament without a fight. The Saints opened game four by scoring the first six points and then had a 7-1 lead before the Tigers called a timeout.
ONU bounced back to take a 10-9 lead but USF responded and regained the lead for most of the middle of the match. USF's last lead was at 20-19 but the Saints did not fall behind by more than two points and closed within 24-23 before Olivet scored the match's final point.
The Saints had four players post double figures in kills, led by junior middle blocker Lauren Hoffman (Plainfield South H.S./Plainfield, IL) who collected 13., Ahline and freshman outside hitter Jazzmyne Robbins (La Salle-Peru H.S./Peru, IL) each finished with a dozen kills and junior outside hitter Kyrsten Becker (Rolling Meadows H.S./Arlington Heights, IL) added 11. Freshman setter Ashley Richards (Wilmington H.S./Wilmington, IL) had 44 assists.
Senior libero Courtney Ambrosch (Joliet Township H.S./Joliet, IL) paced the USF defense with 18 digs and added 21 serve receptions in as many tries. Becker topped the team with 30 serve receptions.
Following the match, the CCAC All-Conference team was announced. USF placed three players on the first team and had two more gain honorable mention. Ambrosch, Robbins and Hoffman were named to the first unit, with Ambrosch also being named the league's Libero of the Year and Robbins being accorded Freshman of the Year accolades. Becker and Ahline each were named to the honorable mention list.
