CLINTON, Iowa --- Turnovers continued to plague University of St. Francis Tuesday night as the Fighting Saints saw their losing streak stretch to seven games with an 89-58 defeat at the hands of Ashford University (Iowa).
Playing to a 10-10 deadlock through the game's first four minutes, the Saints (1-7) turned the ball over on each of their next six possessions en route to an overall 27-turnover night. Nine turnovers in all during a 23-4 run by the hosts turned the tight game into a 33-14 lead for Ashford and an eventual 47-22 advantage at the break.
USF never made a dent in the deficit in the second half as Ashford burst out of the halftime gates with another 23-6 run to open up its biggest advantage at 72-28. The Saints never got closer than 31 points the rest of the night.
St. Francis shot well from the floor on the night converting better than 50 percent of its shots in both halves for an overall .550 report (22-of-40), but the Saints got off 20 less shots than Ashford, which made good on 36-of-60 shots (.600). Ashford committed just 12 turnovers.
Sophomore forward Lukas Zebrauskas (Stagg H.S./Palos Heights, IL) led the Saints off the bench with game highs in both points (16) and rebounds (6). Sophomore center Bruce Watson (Schoolcraft College/Detroit, MI) was perfect from the field (6-of-6) totaling 12 points in just 16 minutes of action.
No other Saint scored more than six points.
Ashford (7-3) had four players score in double figures and seven players tallied no less than seven points. Rashad Carrington led the way with 14 points.
The loss left the Saints winless on the road and ended their season-long seven-game road trip. They host neighboring rival Lewis University Saturday night at the Rec Center. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
