JOLIET, Ill. - University of St. Francis rode the hot shooting hands of junior guard Andrew Fair (Olive-Harvey College/Chicago, IL) and sophomores Billy Hubly (Elk Grove H.S./Elk Grove, IL) and Lukas Zebrauskas (Stagg H.S./Palos Heights, IL) and posted a convincing 77-53 nonconference win over Trinity Christian at the Recreation Center Saturday night.
Hubly led the Saints with 19 points and made 5-of-6 3-point tries as the Saints shot a season-high 75 percent (6-of-8) from beyond the arc. It marked the second straight game that Hubly had hit 5 treys. Zebrauskas made 5-of-7 shots and finished with 14 points, while Fair sank 5-of-8 shots and collected 10 points. Freshman forward Michael Cole (Manley H.S./Chicago, IL) also scored in double figures with a season high 14 points.
USF (4-11) trailed just once in the game at 8-6. They snapped a 12-12 tie midway through the opening half and moved out to a 36-27 lead by halftime.
The Saints quickly established control of the game in the second half, pushing the lead to 11 points at 42-31 with 15:45 left and never letting the Trolls cut the margin to single digits again. The lead was 20 at 53-33 with 10:57 remaining and got as large as 24 at the final margin of 77-53.
USF shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the floor for the game and held Trinity (4-11) to just 29.4 percent (15-of-51) shooting. The Trolls also struggled from 3-point range, hitting only 3-of-17 (17.6) percent for the game.
"We played well defensively, especially in the second half, which was the key," said USF coach Pat Sullivan. "(Trinity Christian) runs two offenses, but they run their flex in a different way, which makes it difficult to defend. So, it was a real tribute to our kids in the way they concentrated on the preparation for the game.
"Billy Hubly played a great game defensively as well as offensively for us," continued Sullivan. "His 3-pointers in the first half got us off to a good start, just like he did at Loyola the other night. And the two freshmen, Michael Cole and Dan Dispenza (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL), also stepped up tonight in making their first collegiate starts."
The Saints leave Sunday for Point Lookout, Mo., where they will play in the College of the Ozarks Tournament on Monday (vs. the host school) and Tuesday (vs. Bellevue of Nebraska).
