
DAVENPORT, Iowa - Senior libero Courtney Ambrosch (Joliet Township H.S./Joliet, IL) earned All-Tournament honors and led an impressive season-opening performance for the Saints who won three of four matches at the St. Ambrose University Early Bird Tournament.
USF notched three-game sweeps over Grand View (IA) and Iowa Wesleyan on Friday. The Saints dropped their only match of the weekend Saturday morning when they fell in three games to NCAA Division II Upper Iowa but then bounced back later in the afternoon to earn a four-game win over Midland Lutheran (NE).
The Saints beat Grand View (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) and were led by Ambrosch who opened the tourney with 26 digs and 15 serve receptions in as many tries. Sophomores Sarah Ahline (Lemont H.S./Lemont, IL) and Kristee Conrad (Stagg H.S./Hickory Hills, IL) each collected 8 kills to lead the Saints' offense. Juniors Lauren Hoffman (Plainfield South H.S./Plainfield, IL) and Kyrsten Becker (Rolling Meadows H.S./Arlington Heights, IL) each added 7 kills and Becker also contributed 15 good service receptions. Senior setter Kelsey Polte (Hall H.S./Spring Valley, IL) provided 38 assists and added 10 digs.
Freshman Jazzmyne Robbins (La Salle-Peru H.S./Peru, IL) led USF in the win over Iowa Wesleyan (25-18, 25-4, 25-17) with 10 kills and fellow frosh Dana Wettergren (Oak Forest H.S./Oak Forest, IL) topped the club with 14 serve receptions.
Robbins was the offensive leader again in the loss to Upper Iowa (18-25, 18-25, 19-25) with 13 kills and Ambrosch paced the defense with 15 digs and 17 receptions.
Robbins capped off a very successful collegiate debut in the final match against Midland Lutheran (25-13, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17) as she notched a weekend-high 14 kills. Becker added 11 kills and Polte posted a weekend-high 50 assists. Ambrosch sealed her all-tourney honors with 24 digs and 16 serve receptions. Senior Karen Gruber (Bradley-Bourbonnais H.S./Bourbonnais, IL) added 15 digs and 16 receptions, with Becker collecting 11 digs and Wettergren adding 10. Becker also topped the defense with 8 total blocks.
USF (3-1) opens its home season on Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. match against NAIA No. 17 Indiana Tech.
