
ROMEOVILLE --- Sophomore Wayland Froelich (Amboy H.S./Amboy, IL) notched a first-place finish in the long jump Saturday afternoon to lead University of St. Francis in its 2010 indoor track season opener at the Lewis University Dick Pond Invitational.
Froelich, who registered a leap of 6.38 meters, was the lone Saint to top the charts in any event, but five others and one relay team also placed among the top three finishers on the day. Runner-up honors went to a pair of Saints in junior Josh Barry (Moraine Valley C.C./Tinley Park, IL) and senior Adam Yost (Sparta H.S./Sparta, MI). Barry, in his St. Francis debut, threw the shot put 11.76 meters, while Yost ran a 1:58.82 in the 800 meters.
Sophomore Jacob Eilers (Hall H.S./Spring Valley, IL) finished right behind Barry in the shot put with his throw of 11.48 meters and earned the same placement in the weigh throw with his toss of 11.21 meters.
USF's 4x400-meter relay team, made up of Froelich, sophomore Sam Hageman (Mount Pulaski H.S./Mount Pulaski, IL), Yost and freshman Dan Kapolnek (St. Thomas More H.S./Champaign, IL), also earned a third-place showing with its 3:39.99 finish, the same spot as freshman Sean Smith (Winnebago H.S./Winnebago, IL) in the 800-meter dash (2:00.42).
Junior Ian McDowell (Lansing Community College/Lansing, MI) posted a time of 2:05.70 to place fifth in the 800.
St. Francis competes in the Grand Valley State University Bob Eubanks Open next Friday (Jan. 22) in Allendale, Mich.
