SOUTH BEND, Ind. -Trailing by eight points with a little over seven minutes remaining in the game, University of St. Francis reeled off a game-ending 22-8 run to storm back and even its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference record at 2-2 with a 75-69 road win over Indiana University South Bend Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward Greg Leavell (Schoolcraft College/Farmington Hills, MI) and junior point guard Andrew Fair (Olive-Harvey College/Chicago, IL) accounted for all but three of the 22 points in that game-winning spurt as USF (6-16/2-2) won its second straight contest for the second time this season.
The late rally, though, was not the first comeback of the day for the Saints. USF trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half at 26-15 before a 12-0 spurt helped it climb out of that hole and regain the lead in the final minute of the half. A 3-point IUSB basket with just five seconds left sent the teams to the locker rooms at the half all tied at 39 apiece.
IUSB (6-17/2-3) and the Saints traded leads in the first 10 minutes of the second half and then found themselves tied again at 53-53 with 10:18 left in the game. The Titans then ran off an 8-0 spurt that put them in front by a 61-53 score and seemingly in control with about seven minutes to play.
But Fair, who finished with a game-high 22 points, and Leavell, who was right behind him with 21, took control of the game in their own hands.
Leavell scored 10 of the Saints' next 13 points - with only a 3-pointer by sophomore Billy Hubly (Elk Grove H.S./Elk Grove, IL) interrupting Leavell's scoring - and USF charged back to regain the lead at 66-63. After an IUSB miss, Fair drained a 3-pointer from the left corner to push the Saints' margin to a half-dozen points at 69-63 with 1:17 remaining.
IUSB cut that lead in half with a 3-pointer of its own at the 1:01 mark but Fair sealed the verdict for the Saints with a driving layup followed by four free throws in the final 39 seconds of play.
"What a great win for our guys," said a beaming USF coach Pat Sullivan following the game. "Adversity was the theme of the day. Both teams struggled through adversity but our guys had the final answer in the last few minutes of the game. I am so proud of the way our guys executed the delay game down the stretch. Greg and Andrew did most of the scoring but it was really a total team effort that got the win today.
"Drew (Fair) hit the big three in the final minute and then made all those free throws," continued Sullivan. "Greg hit so many big shots and Danny Dispenza (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) made some big plays in the post in the second half. But everybody did the job on defense."
The victory comes on the heels of a CCAC road win at Holy Cross last Saturday and puts the Saints at 2-2 in league play and 2-1 on the road in the conference.
"This South Bend team was coming off a tough two-point loss at Saint Xavier this week," added Sullivan. "That proved to us that we were in for a battle today. I'm so proud of the way we responded and finished. This is a nice springboard into a big week ahead of us with Robert Morris and Saint Xavier."
The Saints return home on Wednesday to face Robert Morris for the first time this year and travel to Chicago Saturday for a rematch with Saint Xavier. The Cougars beat USF, 86-75, in Joliet on Jan. 13.
Dispenza joined Fair and Leavell in double figures as the freshman scored 10 points off the bench. Leavell led all rebounders in the game with a season-high 15, notching his second double-double of the 2009-10 season.
