NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Senior guard Katie Carls (St. Bede Academy/Spring Valley, IL) and senior forward Kellie Fazio (Leyden H.S./Rosemont, IL) each scored 19 points as the streaking University of St. Francis women's basketball team won its ninth straight game with an 86-67 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Holy Cross College Sunday afternoon.
Carls had 10 points in the first half to help the Saints (14-10, 5-0) maintain a slim 36-34 lead at the intermission. She came out in the second half and hit her first three 3-points shots of the half to help USF quickly bolt out to a 20-point lead at 58-38. She finished the game with 5 treys in 9 attempts and also led the Saints with 5 assists.
Fazio scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half as well and narrowly missed a double-double as she also collected a game-high 9 rebounds.
USF, who has not lost since a Dec. 28 setback to St. Ambrose in the semifinals of the Saint Xavier Christmas Tournament, struggled at the start of the game and found itself trailing 10-3 in the opening three minutes. The Saints still trailed by seven points at 13-6 before they made their first run of the game.
USF reeled off a 22-6 spurt to open up a 28-19 lead with six minutes left in the half. The host Saints of Holy Cross (5-20, 0-7), though, responded with a 15-8 half-ending run of their own to get back within just two points at the intermission.
Carls' hot hand helped USF open the second half with a 22-4 spurt that gave the Saints a 20-point edge. Holy Cross would twice cut the lead down to 11 points but never into single digits the rest of the way.
In addition to Carls and Fazio, USF got double-figures scoring from senior guard Anna Sears (Providence Catholic H.S./Mokena, IL) and sophomore reserve center Jen Andes (Hall H.S./Princeton, IL) who each knocked in 13 points. Senior guard Jacqie Storm (Sandburg H.S./Orland Park, IL) rounded out the double-digit point producers with 10.
Holy Cross got 48 of its 67 points from just two players. Freshman center Baysia Cox led all scorers in the game with 31 points and added 8 rebounds. Alandrea Nailon added 17 points and 7 boards.
The conference-leading Saints return home to the Recreation Center on Tuesday evening for a 7:30 p.m. CCAC contest with Robert Morris.
