JOLIET, Ill. - Olivet Nazarene made 17 3-point shots for the game and scored 24 points in the five-minute overtime session to outlast University of St. Francis, 119-111, in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday night at the Recreation Center.
USF (15-12, 6-2) trailed by four points at halftime at 45-41 but came back to take its biggest lead of the game at 59-52 with 16:11 left in regulation. The Saints held on to the lead until the 10:08 mark when the Tigers finally regained an advantage at 71-69.
Olivet pushed the lead to as much as six points before St. Francis rallied to take an 86-84 edge with 4:49 left in the second half. The lead changed hands four more times in the final minutes before Olivet tied the contest at 95 apiece on a layup with just 16 seconds left on the clock. USF did manage to beat the ONU pressure and get the ball down the floor for a last-second shot at a win but freshman Marissa Draper's (Joliet Township H.S./Joliet, IL) twisting layup in the final second of the game bounced off the rim and forced the overtime session.
Olivet scored first in the extra period but USF responded with six straight points to claim a 101-97 lead. The Tigers then hit a bucket, forced a USF turnover and then hit another 3-pointer to regain the lead at 102-101. St. Francis got the lead just one more time at 104-102 after a free throw by senior guard Anna Sears (Providence Catholic H.S./Mokena, IL) and a layup from sophomore center Jen Andes (Hall H.S./Spring Valley, IL). But Olivet then took over the game, going on a 10-1 run and grabbing an eight-point advantage at 114-106 with just 1:07 left in the game.
USF got within a half-dozen points at 114-108 but its last chance went away with a missed 3-pointer by senior guard Jacqie Storm (Sandburg H.S./Orland Park, IL) at the 47-second mark and the Tigers put the game away at the free throw line.
The Saints struggled in the latter minutes of regulation and in overtime after losing several key players to fouls. Starters Kaci Baird (Bartlett H.S./Bartlett, IL), Katie Carls (St. Bede Academy/Spring Valley, IL) and Kellie Fazio (Leyden H.S./Rosemont, IL) all fouled out in the final three minutes of regulation. Sears fouled out in the overtime period.
Six players scored in double figures for USF, topped by Storm's 27 points. Andes scored a career-best 21 points and added a career-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double. Sears finished with 16 points. Sophomore Michelle Karr (Providence Catholic H.S./Tinley Park, IL) poured in a career-high 14 points. Carls finished with 12 and Draper had a season-high 11.
The Saints outrebounded ONU, 69-50, but made eight fewer 3-point shots as USF hit just 9-of-30 from beyond the arc.
The Saints are now off for 10 days before playing host to Indiana University South Bend on Feb. 23 at the Recreation Center.
