Senior Pat Grady belted a grand slam to key USF's 9-run first inning in a 15-5 win in game number two on Wednesday.
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- University of St. Francis exploded for a big inning in the nightcap for the second day in a row as the Saints baseball team picked up its third straight split of a doubleheader on day number four of its 8-day, 13-game season-opening Florida trip.
USF dropped the opener to Marian University (Ind.) by a 5-2 score and then scored 9 runs in the first inning of a 15-5 romp in game number two. USF had an 11-run inning to end a win in its second game on Tuesday. USF (4-3) spotted Marian (4-4) a 4-0 lead in the opener and left 10 runners on base in the 5-2 loss. Junior starting pitcher Mitch La Buda (Downers Grove North H.S./Downers Grove, IL) was touched for 6 hits in that rough first inning but then settled down and allowed only a single unearned run and 3 hits in the final six innings.
Sophomore shortstop David Schwabe (Driscoll Catholic H.S./Wood Dale, IL) had 3 of USF's 8 hits in the game and junior first baseman Shawn Hohenbery (Princeville H.S./Princeville, IL) and senior center fielder David Heasley (Crystal Lake Central H.S./Spring Grove, IL) were credited with the Saints' RBI.
USF sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning in the second game and plated 9 runs. The big blow was a long grand slam home run off the bat of senior designated hitter Pat Grady (Sandburg H.S./Orland Park, IL). Senior second baseman Steve Witczak (St. Rita H.S./Chicago, IL) scored twice in the inning and also hit a 2-run triple.
The Saints recorded 18 hits in the five-inning game. Grady had 3 hits, as did Schwabe who finished the doubleheader with 5 singles and a double. Witczak, senior third baseman Andy Zurales (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL) and junior catcher Brent Walters (Lisle H.S./Lisle, IL) all had two hits apiece.
Sophomore starting pitcher Erik Zehme (Sandburg H.S./Orland Park, IL) fired 4-plus innings and collected his first win of the season in his first start. Zehme was perfect for the first 3.1 innings and was touched for only one hit. He walked the first three batters of the fifth inning before departing and all three of those walks eventually scored off the Saints' bullpen.
USF is scheduled to play a single nine-inning game on Thursday against University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 9 a.m. CST.
