ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - University of St. Francis closed its baseball spring trip to Florida with its fifth straight split on Sunday, defeating Ashford University (IA) 5-3 and losing 10-0 to William Woods University (MO).

The Saints reversed the pattern of the four previous splits by winning the first game and losing the second contest. The split left the Saints with a 6-5 mark on the trip which was interrupted by two days of rain outs on Thursday and Friday.

Junior right-handed pitcher David Hexdall (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) earned the win in the opener vs. Ashford, as he tossed the first six innings and scattered 7 hits, a pair of unearned runs and just one earned tally. He struck out three, walked two and hit a pair of batters.

Sophomore Corey Schultz (Kankakee H.S./Kankakee, IL) relieved Hexdall in the seventh and earned his first save of the season.

The Saints scored twice in both the second and third innings and added one more insurance run in the seventh. Run-scoring singles by senior outfielder Tom Serruto (Glenbard West/Glen Ellyn, IL) and sophomore utility player Jesse Gregurich (Coal City H.S./Mazon, IL) led to the early 4-0 lead.

Ashford (1-7) scored once in the fourth and took advantage of a USF error to close the gap to just 4-3 in the sixth. Junior catcher Brent Walters (Lisle H.S./Lisle, IL) gave the Saints a little breathing room with an RBI single in the top of the seventh.

The Saints never threatened in their second game Sunday, falling behind 7-0 in the first inning of their third meeting with William Woods (12-6) in two days. USF and WWU split a pair of extra-inning games on Saturday.

USF managed just two singles off the bats of Walters and freshman first baseman Joe Ruge (Riverside-Brookfield H.S./North Riverside, IL) in the game which was shortened to just five innings due to the 10-run rule.

USF plays next on Friday as the Saints open Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a single, nine-inning game at Robert Morris. USF plays its home openers in a doubleheader the following day - Saturday, March 20 -- against RMU at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.
