JOLIET, Ill. --- Clutch two-out hitting keyed a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep for University of St. Francis as the Saints scored 14 of their 18 runs on the day after two outs in 9-5 and 9-1 victories over Robert Morris University Friday afternoon at Silver Cross Field.
The Saints (8-5, 2-0) rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the opener scoring three runs in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings. Five straight two-out singles, including run-producers by senior catcher Pat Grady (Carl Sandburg H.S./Orland Park, IL), senior centerfielder David Heasley (Crystal Lake Central H.S./Spring Grove, IL) and junior designated hitter Brent Walters (Lisle H.S./Lisle, IL), started the comeback. Walters (3-for-7, 3 RBI on the day) would add another RBI single later as well as one in the nightcap, while Heasley drove in two more runs with his two-out triple in the sixth.
Senior third baseman Andy Zurales (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL) put the Saints up for good, 6-4, with a two-run single in the fourth.
Seven of the nine Saint starters posted two hits each in the contest, including senior leftfielder Tom Serruto (Glenbard West H.S./Glen Ellyn, IL).
Sophomore starter Matt Huck (Marian Central Catholic H.S./McHenry, IL) (1-0) settled down after a rocky first few innings to register his first win of the season. He struck out six batters in the complete-game effort.
In the finale, USF broke the game wide open with an eight-run fourth inning with eight straight Saints reaching base safely after two outs. Included were two-run singles by sophomore shortstop David Schwabe (Driscoll Catholic H.S./Wood Dale, IL) and freshman first baseman Joe Ruge (Riverside-Brookfield H.S./North Riverside, IL).
Senior second baseman Steve Witczak (St. Rita H.S./Chicago, IL) completed a big day at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap. For the day, he went 5-for-8 with three runs scored and another two driven in in the leadoff spot.
Junior David Hexdall (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) (2-1) went the distance on the mound striking out five batters and walking two, while scattering five hits.
The doubleheader marked the start of the conference season for both clubs. Robert Morris, a winner of 13 of its first 15 games this season, fell to 13-4 overall and 0-2 in league play with the pair of losses.
The two teams go right back at it on Saturday at noon at Silver Cross Field.
