ROMEOVILLE, Ill. --- Lewis University pitchers limited University of St. Francis batters to just four hits in each end of the crosstown doubleheader as the Flyers set the Saints back for the fifth time in six games with their 7-3 and 6-3 sweep on Tuesday.
The Saints actually picked up their first run of the day without the aid of a hit when leadoff batter Kendel Behrens (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on the second of back-to-back groundouts. Senior second baseman Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) provided for the 1-0 edge.
Lewis (12-4) got that run right back in the bottom half of the inning before scoring three more runs in the third to open up a 4-1 advantage.
St. Francis then made it a 4-3 game on Carolyn Rupsis' (Bolingbrook H.S./Bolingbrook, IL) first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right-centerfield. The round-tripper was also the team's first for the campaign. That, however, would be as close as USF would get as Lewis relief pitcher Amy Christopher shut the door on the Saints facing just one batter over the minimum (walk) in her three innings of work to earn the save.
Sophomore Jackie Frey (Plainfield South H.S./Plainfield, IL) (1-3) suffered the loss for the Saints.
In the nightcap, Lewis built a 5-0 lead with all four runs in the second inning being unearned. USF managed just one hit through the first five innings off starter Diana Pickrum before Rupsis got things going again for the Saints. Her leadoff double off reliever Karissa Habel in the sixth led to a three-run inning with Boezeman and junior third baseman Caitlin Dolan (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) providing RBI singles.
Pickrum helped herself with the bat authoring her first home run of the season in the fifth inning as part of a personal 2-for-4 game.
Junior Kim Malacina (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, IL) (2-4) was dealt the loss in Game 2 for USF.
The Saints (4-10) will look to turn things around starting Sunday when they play their home and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener facing Purdue University North Central. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
