JOLIET - Robert Morris University jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first three innings of the opener and went on to post 10-4 and 4-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball victories over University of St. Francis Thursday at the Inwood Softball Complex.
USF managed just 5 hits off of RMU righthander Ashley Havertine in the opener and scored its lone run on a solo home run by junior catcher C.J. Rupsis (Bolingbrook H.S./Bolingbrook, IL) in the bottom of the third inning.
USF junior starting pitcher Kim Malacina (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, IL) suffered the loss, snapping a streak of 13 consecutive CCAC regular season starts that she had won over the past three seasons. Malacina's overall record fell to 3-5.
Game two was a tight 1-0 affair until Robert Morris scored two times in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh after USF scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
RMU took the early lead with an unearned run in the first inning off of USF sophomore starting pitcher Jackie Frey (Plainfield South H.S./Plainfield, IL). Frey then blanked the Eagles (17-4, 7-1) on just a pair of hits over the next four innings before surrendering back-to-back leadoff doubles in the sixth and giving way to Malacina.
USF (6-12, 2-2) scored in the sixth when sophomore third baseman Jenny Festin (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) hit her second double of the game and came home on junior Lauren Panek's (Lemont H.S./Lemont, IL) two-out double. Festin's two doubles and Panek's two-bagger were the only hits USF could muster off of RMU starting pitcher Jennifer Burns.
The Saints are home this weekend as they play host to four other schools in the USF Spring Fling at Inwood. USF plays Indiana Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. and Iowa Wesleyan at 6 p.m. on Friday. The Saints will face Saint Francis of Indiana and Goshen (Ind.) on Saturday.
