MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - The University of St. Francis softball team completed a successful jaunt to the Sammons Claasic at Iowa Wesleyan College on Saturday with a pair of wins over the host Tigers and Harris-Stowe State University (Mo.). The Saints defeated IWC 6-4 and handed HSSU a 4-1 defeat.

Junior righthander Kim Malacina (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, IL) earned both pitching wins as the Saints (12-16) completed the tournament with a 4-1 record for the weekend after taking two of three on Friday.

Malacina came on in relief of freshman Jordan Halata (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, IL) in the first game after IWC rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game with a 4-run third inning. Malacina allowed just 4 hits over her 4.1 innings and struck out three.

Junior catcher C.J. Rupsis (Bolingbrook H.S./Bolingbrook, IL) keyed the Saints 9-hit attack with a 2-run inside-the-park home run in the first inning and a sacrifice fly that snapped the 4-4 tie in the fifth. Senior left fielder Maggie O'Shea (Wheeler H.S./Valparaiso, IN) led the Saints with a perfect 3-for-3 game at the plate and also drove in a run. Junior right fielder Kaylee Shell (Wilmington H.S./Wilmington, IL) added a pair of hits and stole a base.

Malacina (6-6) went the distance in the Harris-Stowe game, allowing just one run on six hits. She struck three and walked a pair.

USF spotted the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the second but took the lead for good with a 2-run third. Senior designated player Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) and senior first baseman Lynley Louzensky (Tinley Park H.S./Oak Forest, IL) drove in the runs with a double and single, respectively.

Halata pushed the lead to three runs with a 2-run inside-the-park home run in the fifth. It was Halata's second inside-the-park round tripper in as many days.

Shell, Louzensky and senior right fielder Caitlin Griffin (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) all had two hits apiece in the second game.
