
JOLIET, Ill. - University of St. Francis placed two players among the top four finishers but was not as consistent as Olivet Nazarene University as the Tigers captured the team title in the 16-team USF Men's Golf Spring Invitational at Wedgewood Golf Course on Tuesday.
Olivet Nazarene was the lone team to shoot under 300 with a score of 297. USF was next at 303, followed by Carthage College (WI) at 306, Illinois Central CC at 309 and Benedictine University and Rock Valley College both at 310.
Saints' sophomore Grant Whybark (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) shared low-round honors with Nick Guido of North Central College and Nac Huachai of Ashford University (IA) with an even-par 72 but missed taking medalist honors on a scorecard tiebreaker and finished in second place. USF sophomore Steve Wojcik (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) was just one stroke behind the three leaders with a 73 and earned a tie for the fourth-place spot.
The Saints had no other finishers in the top 20 while ONU had two players who tied with Wojcik for fourth and two others among the top 20 players.
USF's next finisher was freshman Martin Hetelle (Seneca H.S./Seneca, IL) who shot a 6-over par round of 78 and placed in a tie for 30th. Senior Steve Sourigno (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) tied for 37th with a score of 80 and junior Pat Fitzgerald (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S./Flossmoor, IL) rounded out the Saints' first team effort with a score of 81.
USF's second team entrant finished 12th in the field and was led by sophomore Kevin Wiatr (Lemont H.S./Lemont, IL) who fired a 5-over par round of 77. Junior Drew Anderson (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) carded an 80 and sophomore Mike Mysker (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) recorded an 84. Junior Brian Komp (Joliet Township H.S./Joliet, IL) was next with an 85 and junior Adam Billmeyer (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) turned in an 88.
Three additional Saints participated as individuals. Junior Tyler Keith (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL) shot an 82, with freshman Andrew Buchanan (Minooka H.S./Channahon, IL) posting an 85 and junior Jim Mulcahy (Lyons Township H.S./Willow Springs, IL) shooting a 95.
