Elmhurst, Ill. --- University of St. Francis' women's cross country team secured a seventh-place finish in its season-opening meet at the Elmhurst College Early Bird Invitational on Friday at Eldridge Park with senior
Meghan Bannatz (Novi H.S./Novi, MI) continuing where she left off one year ago.
Bannatz, a nationals qualifier in 2008, placed 13th overall among 162 runners, notching a 16:08 time at the 4K event.
USF's next three runners were bunched together around the 17-minute mark with junior Brittany McAllister (Plainfield South H.S./Crest Hill, IL) heading that contingent with her time of 16:53 to place 39th overall. Next up was sophomore Courtney Madden (Plainfield Central H.S./Plainfield, IL) (43rd, 17:02) followed by freshman Torin Mallonee (Xavier H.S./Cedar Rapids, IA) (55th, 17:19).
Freshman Renee Cholyway (Regina H.S./Warren, MI) nudged out teammate Lainy Sekuloski (Novi H.S./Novi, MI) for the fifth and final scoring spot with her 17:40 finish (69th). Sekuloski was one spot and one second behind.
Wheaton College captured the 13-team meet scoring 56 points. The Thunder was followed by
Lewis University (66 points) and host Elmhurst (81). USF totaled 183 points.
The Saints return to action in two weeks on Sept. 18 when they compete in the National Catholic College Championships, hosted by University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
