
MACOMB, Ill. --- NCAA I Western Illinois University got the better of University of St. Francis as the Leathernecks earned a 6-1 victory over the Saints at the Varsity Courts Saturday afternoon.
Senior Luis Oliveira (Seward County C.C., KS/Sao Lourenco, Brazil) posted USF's only victory on the day with his 6-3, 6-1 win over Rodrigo Azevedo at No. 3 singles.
Oliveira and senior Scott Surges (Providence Catholic H.S./Joliet, IL) also nearly pulled off a victory at No. 1 doubles before falling, 8-7 (7-4).
Surges took his No. 2 singles matches to a third set, as well, before going down to defeat, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. The same was true for junior Jacob Quigley (Saint Xavier University/Joliet, IL), who won his first set at No. 4 singles, 7-5, only to fall in the other two sets, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-8).
USF (13-6) hosts Olivet Nazarene University on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Challenge Fitness Tennis Courts in Lockport.
