CHICAGO --- University of St. Francis sophomore hurler Corey Schultz (Kankakee H.S./Kankakee, IL) performed double duty on Sunday and the results were doubly-good for the Saints as they moved into sole possession of second place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 2-1 and 8-6 doubleheader sweep of Illinois Institute of Technology at Ed Glancy Field.
Schultz (6-0) ended up earning both victories after working six innings of scoreless relief on the day, allowing just two hits and one walk. He worked the final two innings of the opener before tossing four innings of one-hit relief in the nightcap.
In the latter affair, Schultz allowed the tying run to score in the fourth inning before retiring the final 10 batters he faced on the day.
In the opener, the Saints were held hitless through the first 5 1/3 innings before a pair of doubles by senior infielders Steve Witczak (St. Rita H.S./Chicago, IL) and Andy Zurales (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL) knotted the game at 1-1. Senior center fielder David Heasley (Crystal Lake Central H.S./Spring Grove, IL) then opened the seventh inning with a double and came around to score the eventual game-winning run on senior left fielder Tom Serruto's (Glenbard West H.S./Glen Ellyn, IL) single up the middle.
USF looked as though it was going to cruise in the nightcap scoring five runs in the first inning with two coming home on the first of two doubles by freshman first baseman Joe Ruge (Riverside-Brookfield H.S./North Riverside, IL). Ruge finished the game going 3-for-4.
A pair of three-run innings by Illinois Tech (10-16, 8-10) tied the contest at six in the fourth before the Saints picked up RBI singles from Heasley and senior right fielder Tom Whelan (St. Rita H.S./Chicago, IL) in the fifth inning to secure the win. For both players, it was their second hit of the game with Heasley's run batted in also being his second of the game.
Winners of nine of their last ten games and eight in a row in conference play, the Saints return to action Tuesday hosting CCAC foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (IN) at 2 p.m.
