LOCKPORT, Ill. - Olivet Nazarene University swept all three doubles matches to take an early lead and then went on to defeat University of St. Francis, 8-1, in men's tennis action at the outdoor courts at Challenge Fitness on Monday afternoon.
The Tigers, who narrowly missed the top 25 in the most recent NAIA national rankings, improved their record to 10-5 while the Saints fell to 13-7.
USF got its only win at No. 3 singles when senior Luis Oliveira (Sao Laurenco, Brazil) won a shortened match. Oliveira was leading 3-1 in the first set when Olivet's Hugo Moriya retired due to an ailing knee. It marked the second straight match in which Oliveira scored USF only individual victory. He also won his singles bout in a 6-1 loss at NCAA Division I Western Illinois on Saturday.
Junior Jake Quigley (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) was the lone Saint to push his foe to three sets. He won his first set by a 6-4 score but the dropped sets two and three to ONU's Mark Bell by 6-2 and 6-4 counts.
The Saints led two of the doubles bouts in the early going but were unable to hold on. The number two doubles pairing of Quigley and senior Jakub Szymanski (Bethany College/Poznan, Poland) held a 5-2 advantage but then dropped the match 8-6.
The Saints travel to Bloomington on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match at Illinois Wesleyan University.
