JOLIET, Ill. --- Powered by Andy Zurales' two-run home run in the opener and four hits on the day, University of St. Francis made it eight straight wins against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents when it swept visiting Calumet College of St. Joseph (IN), 2-1 and 11-3, Tuesday afternoon at Silver Cross Field.
Zurales' hot bat - he has hit safely in a season-high 10 straight games - also extended the Saints' winning streak to six game in a row overall and pushed their victory count to 11 games in their last 12 outings.
In the opener, USF (24-12, 15-5) was held hitless through the first five innings by Nick Bolda before senior left fielder Tom Serruto (Glenbard West H.S./Glen Ellyn, IL) got an infield single to open the bottom of the sixth. Two outs later, Zurales unloaded on a fastball with his towering home run to right field to erase Calumet's 1-0 lead.
For Zurales (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL), it was his seventh home run of the season.
Sophomore righthander Justin Blaine (Coal City H.S./Coal City, IL) (1-0) gained the victory in his first start as a Saint. He went the distance allowing the one run on four hits. He also struck out seven batters opposite one walk.
In the nightcap, the pesky Crimson Wave (4-36, 3-20) hung with the Saints through the first four innings before USF broke a 3-3 tie with a six-run fifth inning followed by a two-run sixth.
Zurales drove in another two runs off three hits in the second game, while senior designated hitter Pat Grady (Carl Sandburg H.S./Orland Park, IL) plated another three runs with a pair of hits. Senior left fielder Joe Prohaska (St. Laurence H.S./Chicago, IL) also had two hits and two RBI.
