JOLIET, Ill. - University of St. Francis wrapped up its softball home schedule and clinched a spot in the 2010 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The Saints won the opener, 8-0 in five innings, and then took the nightcap, 5-3.

The Saints (21-20, 9-5) used a pair of big first innings to key the twin bill sweep on Senior Day.

USF scored six times in the bottom of the first of game one, stringing together six hits with a hit batter in the mix. Five different players drove home runs, with junior shortstop Caitlin Dolan (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) capping the uprising with a two-run double to left field.

The Saints added one more in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Jenny Festin (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL). USF ended the game in the fifth when senior second baseman Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) drilled a bases-loaded single to finish the contest due to the eight-run rule.

Sophomore pitcher Jackie Frey (Plainfield South H.S./Plainfield, IL) went the distance and allowed just two hits over five innings.

The Saints tallied four times in the first inning of the second game, with freshman pitcher Jordan Halata (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, IL) driving in the final two runs of the frame with a double to left field.

Calumet chipped away with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to slice the lead to 4-3. USF got some insurance in the fifth when Boezeman led off with a double and scored two outs later on a Calumet error.

Junior pitcher Kim Malacina (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, IL) relieved Halata in the fourth and pitched the final 3.1 innings to notch the win (10-7).

On the day, USF had a number of players with multiple hits. Boezeman had four hits in the two games, scored four times and drove home two runs. Junior right fielder Kaylee Shell (Wilmington H.S./Wilmington, IL) had three hits in the two games and scored twice. Dolan went 3-for-3 in the opener with two runs driven in. Senior first baseman Stacy Heap (Minooka H.S./Minooka, IL) had a pair of hits and an RBI in the first game, as did Festin and junior catcher C.J. Rupsis (Bolingbrook H.S./Bolingbrook, IL).

USF is off until Tuesday when it travels to Palos Heights for a CCAC doubleheader at Trinity Christian College. The Saints then wrap up the regular season at CCAC-leading Olivet Nazarene next Thursday. The six-team conference tournament begins May 6 at Olivet Nazarene.
