
LOCKPORT, Ill. - University of St. Francis wrapped up its men's tennis regular season with a 9-0 victory Sunday over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) at the Challenge Fitness indoor courts.
The victory moves USF's record to 15-7 and was the Saints' seventh win by a 9-0 this season.
Five of USF's six singles players won their matches in straight sets. That group included No. 1 player junior Jakub Szymanski (Bethany College/Poznan, Poland), No. 2 senior Scott Surges (Providence Catholic H.S./Joliet, IL), No. 3 senior Luis Oliveira (Sao Laurenco, Brazil), No. 4 junior Jake Quigley (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) and No. 6 freshman Nikola Milenkovic (Belgrade, Serbia).
Freshman Andres Stecher (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was extended to a tirebreaker third set and won that 1-0 (11-9).
Oliveira and Surges won handily at No. 1 doubles (8-2) but the other two doubles teams were pushed to longer matches. Quigley and Szymanski won at No. 2 by an 8-6 score and Milenkovic and junior Erick Dobrzynski (Moraine Valley CC/Justice, IL) won at No. 3 by a 9-7 count.
The Saints travel to Bourbonnais Thursday to begin play in the NAIA National Qualifying Tournament. USF, the No. 3 seed in the four-team field, plays No. 2 seeded and host Olivet Nazarene at noon. No. 1 seed Aquinas (Mich.) plays No. 4 St. Ambrose (Iowa) in the other semifinal. The finals will be played on Friday with the winner advancing to the NAIA Championship Tournament in Mobile, Ala., May 18-22.
