CHANNAHON, Ill. - University of St. Francis fired a team score of 303 on the second day of competition to overcome first-round leader Olivet Nazarene University and claim the title in the first-ever Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship Tournament. The 36-hole, six-team affair was played at Heritage Bluffs Public Golf Club.
The victory not only gives USF the conference championship but also puts Coach Paul Downey's Saints into the NAIA National Championship field for the second consecutive year.
With the addition of Holy Cross College to the CCAC and with Judson University adding men's golf to its sport offerings, the conference had the minimum six teams required to give it an automatic berth into the NAIA Championship meet.
Sophomore Grant Whybark (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) fired rounds of 73 and 72 for a 145 total and shared low score honors with tournament medalist Seth Doran of Olivet Nazarene.
Junior Drew Anderson (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) finished with rounds of 77 and 75 for a 36-hole total of 152 and joined Whybark as a first-team All-CCAC selection.
Freshman Martin Hetelle (Seneca H.S./Seneca, IL) carded rounds of 79 and 77 for a 156 tourney score, with senior Steve Sourigno (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) just one stroke back at 157 (77-80). Sophomore Steve Wojcik (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) completed the USF scoring with a pair of 79's on Monday and Tuesday for a tournament total of 158.
Hetelle, Sourigno and Wojcik all were named Honorable Mention All-CCAC after the meet.
USF's final team score of 609 for the 36 holes was five strokes ahead of second-place Olivet Nazarene (614). Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) and Robert Morris University tied for third at 643. Holy Cross was fifth at 654 and Judson placed sixth at 675.
The NAIA National Championship Tournament will be held for the second straight year at the TPC at Deere Run course in Silvis, Ill., near the Quad Cities. That tourney will be played May 18-21.
