GARY, Ind. --- University of St. Francis spotted Calumet College of St. Joseph (IN) seven runs in the first two innings before outscoring the Crimson Wave 15-3 the rest of the way to run its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference winning streak to 14 games with a 15-10 slugfest victory on Wednesday.
Sophomore shortstop David Schwabe (Driscoll Catholic H.S./Wood Dale, IL) paced the 17-hit parade for the Saints going 5-for-6 with three runs batted in. All of his RBI came in back-to-back four-run innings in the fourth and fifth frames for the Saints to wipe out the original deficit.
Schwabe, who also scored a pair of runs, fell a home run short of hitting for the cycle with his three singles, double and triple.
Freshman first baseman Joe Ruge (Riverside-Brookfield H.S./North Riverside, IL) put the Saints up for good with his first collegiate home run in the second four-run uprising as part of a three-RBI day for him.
Senior third baseman Andy Zurales (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL) also drove in a pair of runs and collected two RBI, while seniors Pat Grady (Carl Sandburg H.S./Orland Park, IL) and Tom Serruto (Glenbard West H.S./Glen Ellyn, IL) posted two hits and two RBI each.
Senior second baseman Steve Witczak (St. Rita H.S./Chicago, IL) rounded out the list of multi-hit performers.
Sophomore hurler Bobby Markatos (Stagg H.S./Palos Hills, IL) (3-1) slowed down Calumet's offense upon his arrival on the mound in place of starter Justin Blaine (Coal City H.S./Coal City, IL) to earn the win. Markatos pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings before allowing a home run in the seventh.
Sophomore Corey Schultz (Kankakee H.S./Kankakee, IL) finished off the Crimson Wave working the final 2 2/3 innings beginning with an improbable double caught-stealing play before he even threw a pitch in the seventh inning when he caught Calumet's Adam Cobb in a rundown to start the bizarre series of events.
Schultz was credited with his fourth save of the season.
USF (29-13, 19-5) scored in every inning from the third on with the exception of the eighth. After Calumet (4-38, 3-22) pulled to within two runs, 12-10, in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Saints tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth leading to their fifth 15-plus run game of the season.
USF opens up a three-game homestand versus Cardinal Stritch University (WI) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday followed by a single nine-inning contest at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
