JOLIET, Ill. --- Trinity International University turned six double plays and Greg Hess went the distance on the mound as the Trojans snapped University of St. Francis' 19-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference winning streak with a 7-1 victory at Silver Cross Field Thursday afternoon.
TIU (30-21, 14-16) scored multiple runs in the first, third and fifth innings to open up a 7-0 lead.
The Saints, meanwhile, had multiple runners on base in six separate innings only to be wiped out by the six double plays.
USF (34-14, 24-6) avoided being shutout for just the second time this season when junior Shawn Hohenbery (Princeville H.S./Princeville, IL) plated senior centerfielder David Heasley (Crystal Lake Central H.S./Spring Grove, IL) with a single up the middle in the ninth inning.
Hohenbery, Heasley, freshman designated hitter Joe Ruge (Riverside-Brookfield, IL/North Riverside, IL) and sophomore rightfielder Tom Whelan (St. Rita H.S./Chicago, IL) all had a pair of hits for the Saints.
Junior David Hexdall (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) (5-4) suffered the loss on the mound allowing nine hits and all seven runs in the regular-season finale for both clubs.
The Saints take the next 12 days off before playing in the NAIA World Series Opening Round Tournament May 18-20 at Silver Cross Field. Times and pairings will be announced late next week.
