SILVIS, Ill. - University of St. Francis compiled a team score of 312 on day number two and slipped from a tie for 11th place to 19th place in the team standings at the NAIA Men's Golf Championships at the TPC Course at Deere Run on Wednesday.
USF shot an even 300 in Tuesday's first round with all four scoring Saints breaking 80. Only two Saints, though - junior Drew Anderson (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) and freshman Martin Hetelle (Seneca H.S./Seneca, IL) managed to shoot in the 70's on Wednesday.
Anderson, who was the only Saint who did not score in the 70's on Tuesday, shot a team-best 73 on Wednesday. Hetelle followed with a 78 and stands in a tie for 29th individually in the 156 player field with a 36-hole total of 149 (7-over par).
Sophomore Grant Whybark (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) notched an 80 on Wednesday, with senior Steve Sourigno (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) and sophomore Steve Wojcik (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) both carding 81's.
USF needs to move up a minimum of two spots in Thursday's third round in order to make the final cut and get to play in Friday's fourth and final round. The field of 29 teams will be trimmed to the top 17 teams and 40 individuals (including ties) after the 54-hole mark. The Saints, with a 36-hole total of 612, are just one stroke behind the two teams that are currently tied for 17th at 611 - St. Ambrose (IA) and William Woods (MO). South Carolina Beaufort leads the team race with a two-day total of 586, 26 shots ahead of the Saints.
In addition to Hetelle's high standing, Whybark currently is tied for 71st at 154 but is just four shots behind the players that are tied for 39th which would be the current cut mark.
