Jess Horn improved to a 10th place finish this year at the NAIA heptathlon.
MARION, Ind. - Senior Jessica Horn (Montague H.S./Montague, MI) improved on her performances of the past two years and placed 10th out of 16 competitors in the women's heptathlon at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Horn, who finished 13th two years ago and 15th last May at the NAIA meet, moved into the top 10 as a senior with a total of 4,448 points over the seven events. As expected, Horn performed the best in the 100-meter hurdles which is normally her strongest event. She finished eighth in that race with a time of 15.48 seconds. She also placed ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.41 seconds. Horn missed scoring team points by just two spots.
Senior Meghan Bannatz (Novi H.S./Novi, MI) made her second trip to the national meet in the 10,000 meters and placed 40th out of 43 competitors with a time of 41:29.32. It was her first trip to the outdoor national meet since her freshman season in 2007.
Freshman thrower Chelsea Rimington (Lena-Winslow H.S./Lena, IL) made her national meet debut with a 26th-place finish (out of 32 entrants) in the shot put. Rimington recorded a mark of 39 feet, 8.5 inches.
Joining with the three members of USF's men's team (Josh Barry, Ian McDowell and Sean Smith), the group of six total athletes is the largest that has gone to an NAIA national outdoor meet in Coach Drew Ludtke's five years at USF.
