JOLIET -- Pat Sullivan, who retired this past March after a 34-year run and over 500 wins as men's basketball coach, heads a list of six inductees who will be enshrined as members of the 2010 University of St. Francis Hall of Fame class. The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 7 at the USF campus.
Sullivan, who also served as Director of Athletics, Athletics Chairman and Assistant to the President during his time at USF, stepped down from his coaching duties at the completion of the recent 2009-10 season. He won 506 games with the Saints and directed a pair of teams to NAIA national tournaments in 1994 and 1996.
Sullivan, one of the people behind the formation of the USF Hall of Fame back in 1991, will be joined by five other outstanding Saints in the class of 2010, including one man that sat next to him on the USF bench for the past 24 years.
Jack Hermanski joined Sullivan's coaching staff in 1986 after a highly successful run as the head basketball coach at nearby Romeoville High School. He retired along with his close friend Sullivan at the conclusion of this past season. Hermanski, simply known as "Coach Jack" by all his players and associates at USF, tutored the Saints' post players and helped Sullivan in all phases of the program for nearly a quarter-century.
Four former student-athletes join Sullivan and Hermanski in the class of 2010, including two who excelled as players for the Saints and later served as college head coaches.
Ali Franzen was a standout pitcher for the Saints' highly successful softball program and later served as the Saints' head coach from 1993-2003. She compiled a record of 143-84-1 over that stint before stepping down and turning the program back over to Dick Smith, who initially recruited Franzen to play for St. Francis back in 1993.
Franzen helped lead the Saints to a pair of national tournament appearances and finished her stellar career with 68 victories, including 30 shutouts. She posted a career earned run average of 1.67 and tossed 91 complete games. Her finest season came as a junior when she compiled a 20-8 record with 190 strikeouts in 193.1 innings and was named a second-team NAIA All-American.
Paul Chovanec joins his sister-in-law Franzen in the class of 2010. Chovanec is married to former USF softball standout Marissa Franzen who is now the highly successful head softball coach at Lockport High School.
Chovanec posted a perfect 14-0 record and was the winning pitcher in the title game as USF notched its only team national championship when the Saints won the 1993 NAIA Baseball World Series at Des Moines, Iowa. One week after leading the Saints and Coach Gordie Gillespie to the title, Chovanec was named the NAIA Player of the Year.
Laney Pellegrini led USF to its only appearance in the NAIA Women's Basketball Division I National Tournament as a junior in the 2001-02 season. The Saints dropped an opening-round game in that tourney but got there by posting a 22-11 record prior to the national tournament and captured the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship.
In her three seasons at USF after transferring from Kankakee Community College, Pellegrini helped lead the Saints to a record of 61-37. She averaged 16.4 points per game in her USF career and was a three-time first-team All-CCAC selection. She was also the CCAC Co-Most Valuable Player in 2002-03.
Bob Halberg was one of the pioneers of the cross country and track and field programs at St. Francis in the mid-1970's after the school went co-educational and started its athletics programs. He was an outstanding runner for the Saints as a student and later became the head coach of the Lewis University cross country team.
Halberg was a three-time national qualifier in cross country, placing as high as 39th individually in the national meet as a senior in 1975. He placed third, eighth and second in his three NAIA District 20 Championship meets from 1973-75 and earned All-American recognition following his senior season.
The induction dinner will take place on August 7 at the San Damiano Hall in the Motherhouse. Those interested in attending should contact the USF Athletic Department office (815/740-3464).
