
DEARBORN, Mich. - Seniors Kyrsten Becker (Rolling Meadows H.S./Arlington Heights, IL) and Lauren Hoffman (Plainfield South H.S./Plainfield, IL) captured All-Tournament honors and led the Saints to four convincing victories as University of St. Francis opened its 2010 volleyball season with a 4-0 record at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Earlybird Tourney on Friday and Saturday.
Becker and Hoffman led the Saints' offense with 42 and 37 kills, respectively, as USF won 12 of the 14 games they played over the two days.
The Saints opened play on Friday with a 3-1 win (23-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-16) over Cornerstone (MI), an unranked team in 2010 but one that has been frequently rated among the top 25 in NAIA volleyball in recent years. After dropping the first set, USF stormed back to take the final three with its winning margin growing in each set. Sophomore Jazzmyne Robbins (La Salle-Peru H.S./Peru, IL) led the Saints with 14 kills, with Hoffman adding 13. Becker topped the Saints with 21 service receptions and freshman libero Breanne Shaw (Joliet Township H.S./Joliet, IL) topped the team with 34 digs in her collegiate debut.
USF completed Friday's play with an easy three-game sweep over Notre Dame College (OH) (25-11, 25-19, 25-19). Becker had 11 kills and Hoffman contributed 10. Shaw was perfect on 19 serve receptions and again led the team with 15 digs.
USF started play at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday and posted its third straight win with a 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-19, 25-27, 25-20) over Bethel College (IN). Becker dominated the contest with 19 kills, 17 serve receptions and 13 digs. Hoffman added 9 kills and 5 blocks. Junior Sarah Ahline (Lemont H.S./Lemont, IL) added 10 kills. Shaw again paced the defense with 29 receptions and 19 digs. Sophomore Ashley Thompson (Portage H.S./Hobart, IN) also added 13 digs. Senior setter Kelsey Polte (Hall H.S./Spring Valley, IL) ran the offense with 32 assists.
The Saints finished the weekend with another three-game sweep, this time downing Spring Arbor University (MI) (25-22, 25-21, 25-12). Robbins topped the team with 9 kills. Sophomore setter Ashley Richards (Wilmington H.S./Wilmington, IL) posted 29 assists. Sophomore Dana Wettergren (Oak Forest H.S./Oak Forest, IL) led the Saints with 4 service aces. Shaw led USF again with 17 receptions and 20 digs.
USF (4-0) travels to Chicago on Friday and Saturday to play in the Saint Xavier/Illinois Tech Crossover Tournament.
