JOLIET, Ill. - University of St. Francis went right down to the wire for the second time in three days but the Lady Saints soccer team came up just short again, falling 1-0 in the first overtime period to Notre Dame College (OH).
The Saints (0-5), who dropped a 4-3 squeaker at Mount Mercy (IA) on Friday afternoon, played the Falcons dead even for nearly 95 minutes. Notre Dame (2-3), who received eight votes in last week's NAIA national poll and just missed the top 25, finally scored the game's only goal less than five minutes into the first extra session when the Falcons' Katie Christensen scored from right in front of the net off a feed from Coley Prendergast.
USF outshot the favored Falcons, 5-4, and managed to get half of its 10 shots on goal for the game. USF sophomore forward Erin Voss (Nazareth Academy/Elmhurst, IL) had 4 of the Saints' 7 shots on goal and attempted 7 of the team's total shots. Voss had USF's best chance to score, but her breakaway shot in the first half was turned back on an excellent play by NDC goalkeeper Brittany Cruz.
Senior Ashley Kekelik (T.F. South HS./Lansing, IL) enjoyed her finest game in goal to date. She posted a shutout through the regulation 90 minutes and finished the game with 4 saves.
Senior midfielder Caitlin Byrnes (Plainfield South H.S./Joliet, IL) was credited with the Saints' remaining shot on goal.
The Saints played for the second straight game without the services of four-year starter Chelsea Wagner (Eaton H.S./Eaton, OH). The senior defender injured her ankle in last weekend's loss at Marian (IN) and is out indefinitely.
USF returns to action Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. when the Saints play host to Grace College (IN) at the Galowich YMCA field.
