PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – With a doubleheader sweep over Trinity Christian College on Saturday, University of St. Francis gained sole possession of first place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball standings. After edging the Trolls 5-4 in game one, the Saints took the nightcap 14-2.

With the two victories, USF (29-14) improved to 14-3 in CCAC play to take a one-game lead over Judson University for the top spot in the league standings. Trinity Christian, which defeated the Saints 5-2 in the first game of the three-game weekend series Friday at Silver Cross Field, fell to 19-20, 7-10.

Game 1 – USF 5, Trinity Christian 4

Trailing 4-3 heading into the seventh and final inning, USF plated a pair of runs in its final at-bat en route to the come-from-behind 5-4 victory. Senior center fielder Kyle Burton (Kankakee, Ill./ Herscher) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and two batters later came around to score on a double off the bat of junior shortstop Kevin Mampe (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way Central). Sophomore first baseman Anthony Faron (New Lenox, Ill./ St. Rita) followed with a base hit to bring home Mampe with the go-ahead run.

USF fell behind 2-0 after two innings before evening the score on a Mampe two-run single in the third. Mampe finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Burton was 2-for-3 with two runs.

Senior Austin Mendell (Kankakee, Ill./ Herscher) tossed a scoreless sixth inning to record his first victory in three decisions this spring. Senior Dan Darling (Coal City, Ill./ Coal City) pitched the ninth to notch his 10th save.

Game 2 – USF 14, Trinity Christian 2

Mampe went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a home run and four RBIs to lead the Saints' 16-hit onslaught as they took game two 12-4. He delivered a run-scoring double in the opening frame before clubbing a three-run home run – his third of the season – in the fourth.

Junior left fielder Pat Michalak (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way Central) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Darling also collected two RBIs.

Junior Tom Jeffries (Mokena, Ill./ Providence Catholic) improved to 3-0 with the complete-game victory. He limited the Trolls to two runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in the seven-inning stint.

USF faces Trinity International University in a CCAC twinbill Tuesday afternoon in Deerfield.
