FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The St. Francis football team fell to 0-2 on the season after a 68-23 setback against No. 1 Saint Francis (Ind.).

A big second quarter separated the hosts. Saint Francis (Ind.) outscored the Saints (0-2) 34-6 in that frame. Nick Ferrer led the Cougars (2-0) offensively with 301 yards and five passing touchdowns.

Saint Francis (Ind.) started the game with an 11-play, 90-yard touchdown drive. The Saints answered with a solid march of their own and cut into the deficit with a Grayson Barnette (Lonoir, N.C./West Caldwell) 26-yard field goal.

The Cougars scored the next two touchdowns, both passes by Ferrer. The PAT attempt on the latter touchdown was blocked by Malik Thurman (Bellwood, Ill./Proviso West)Jarrell Williams (Robbins, Ill./Richards) returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards to spark a 46-yard touchdown drive that culminated with a Don Butkus' (Dyer, Ind./Mount Carmel) touchdown strike to Jean Pietrzak (Westmont, Ill./Westmont).

Saint Francis (Ind.) added some separation in the latter portions of the second quarter scoring four touchdowns, three from Ferrer and one blocked field goal that was returned for a score.

The Saints scored twice in the fourth quarter to round out their 23 points on the day. Arthur King (Jacksonville, Fla./Forrest) returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown and then, in relief of Butkus, Aaron Ellis (Valparaiso, Ind./Boone Grove) hit Lexus Jackson (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) for a 49-yard score.

The Saints used three different quarterbacks on the day with Ellis totaling a team-high 100 yards. Butkus, who battled through a first quarter injury, rounded out his day with 66 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) finished with 51 yards on one catch, while Ray Vallot (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) led the team with three receptions.

On defense, the Saints forced a pair of turnovers to bring their total to five on the season. King returned his interception to the endzone and Tariq Thurman (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) pounced on a fumble. Mason DeLong (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) recorded a game-high 11 tackles.

For Saint Francis (Ind.), three of Ferrer's five touchdowns were to Rocky James. Justin Green powered the Cougar ground game 120 rushing yards a pair of scores. Piercen Harnish posted a team-high nine tackles.

The Saints look for their first win of 2017 when they travel to Siena Heights on September 23.
