MARION, Ind. --- University of St. Francis' play in the Indiana Wesleyan University PPG Sports Wildcat Classic on Friday and Saturday turned out to be a case of déjà vu. For the second weekend in a row, the Fighting Saints gained a four-match split in tournament play winning once each of the two days.
USF did the same at the Saint Xavier University/Illinois Institute of Technology Crossover Tournament one week earlier with both times keeping head coach Cara Currier's club one win above the .500 mark on the season after all was said and done.
This time around, the Saints (8-7) opened with a 21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 victory over host Indiana Wesleyan before Bethel College (Ind.) rallied late to defeat USF 18-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 16-14 on Friday.
On Saturday, USF claimed a 25-18, 15-25, 25-15, 29-27 win over Goshen College (Ind.), but Malone University (Ohio) got the better of the Saints in the finale, winning 24-26, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22.
Freshman outside hitter Jazzmyne Robbins (La Salle-Peru H.S./Peru, IL) stood out for USF with an imposing 72 kills for the weekend - 4.80 per game - and a solid .393 attack percentage. Robbins began her big weekend with 15 kills and only one error in 21 chances (.667 attack percentage) in the opener against Indiana Wesleyan.
She, however, was not the only Saint doing damage to the hosts. Junior outside hitter Kyrsten Becker (Rolling Meadows H.S./Arlington Heights, IL) added another ten kills with only one error in 18 chances (.500) and junior middle hitter Lauren Hoffman (Plainfield South H.S./Plainfield, IL) produced eight kills opposite no errors in 17 chances (.471), to go along with four blocks.
Those same numbers never carried over to the second match as the Saints committed 20 errors and produced an overall attack percentage (.145) half as high against Bethel. Robbins did total a weekend-high 22 kills in the match and senior libero Courtney Ambrosch's (Loyola University/Joliet, IL) 28 digs served as highlights for the match.
USF's hitting prowess returned Saturday morning with freshman setter Ashley Richards (Wilmington H.S./Wilmington, IL) producing a weekend-best 50 assists in the four-set win over Goshen. Two other freshmen, outside hitters Dana Wettergren (Oak Forest H.S./Oak Forest, IL) and Erin McNeil (Plymouth H.S./Plymouth, IN), also keyed the win with Wettergren authoring five aces and McNeil, four blocks.
In the finale, Robbins netted her third 17-plus kills match over the two days, Richards amassed 47 assists for her third 40-plus assist match in four matches and Ambrosch totaled 29 passes and a weekend-high 33 digs, but it wasn't enough against Malone, which improved to 7-2.
USF, 5-5 on its current 12-match road trip, meets Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Purdue University North Central at the Courts of Northwest Indiana in Valparaiso, Ind. on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Saints' lone match of the week.
