
ALLENDALE, Mich. --- Freshman Jake Ferris (Plainfield South H.S./Joliet, IL) stamped his ticket to the NAIA Indoor National Championships in the 800 meter run and junior Wayland Froelich (Amboy H.S./Amboy, IL) placed first in the triple jump on a night where University of St. Francis rewrote the school record book no fewer than five times to go along with establishing 16 personal records at the Grand Valley State University (MI) Tune-Up Meet on Friday.
Ferris was one of the Saints to establish a new top mark with his 1:56.20 time in the 800 meter run, where he placed third out of 39 competitors.
The other four to pencil their names into the school record book were sophomores Phil Rizzo (Evergreen Park H.S./Evergreen Park, IL) and Vincenzo Leone (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL), freshman Corbin Orr (Clinton Central H.S./Forest, IN) and senior Ian McDowell (Lansing Community College/Lansing, MI).
Rizzo made his mark in the 5,000 meter run placing second in a field of 35 with his time of 15:30.59, while McDowell did so in the 3,000 meter run at 8:55.75. He finished 13th.
Leone and Corbin both placed ninth in their respective events with Orr completing the 60 meter hurdles in 8.89 seconds and Leone running a 51.11 in the 400 meter dash.
A total of eight Saints placed in the top 10 at the meet highlighted by Froelich's first-place finish among 13 other challengers in the triple jump, where he authored a leap of 13.79 meters. Others in the mix were sophomore Jeremy Kaplan (Iowa Central Community College/New Lenox, IL), junior Josh Barry (Moraine Valley Community College/Tinley Park, IL) and freshman Eric Davis (Westmont H.S./Westmont, IL).
Kaplan recorded a jump of 6.18 meters in the long jump to place fourth out of 17, Barry was sixth out of 18 in the weight throw (15.59 meters) and Davis was tenth in the shot put with his toss of 13.71 meters.
USF heads to the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Geneva, Ohio March 3-5 to round out the indoor season.
