MOLINE, Ill. --- University of St. Francis gained a split of its six singles decisions, but dropped two of three doubles matches in falling 5-4 to St. Ambrose University (IA) on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Jakub Szymanski (Bethany College, KS/Poznan, Poland) accounted for half of USF's victories with his 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles and an 8-3 decision at No. 3 doubles. In the latter match, he was teamed up with sophomore Andres Stecher (Pestalozzi H.S./Buenos Aires, Argentina).
Stecher just narrowly missed out on scoring a pair of wins himself. He opened his No. 4 singles match with a 7-6 (9-7) first-set victory before dropping his second and third sets, 6-4, 10-7.
USF' other singles winners were freshman Mark Zubov (St. Petersburg H.S./St. Petersburg, Russia) and senior Erick Dobrzynski (Moraine Valley Community College/Justice, IL). Both players earned 6-4, 6-1 wins at No. 2 and 6 singles, respectively, after working overtime, but falling at No. 2 doubles, 9-7.
With the win, St. Ambrose evened its record out at 5-5.
The Saints (1-3) take the next two weeks off before heading to Florida for seven matches in six days beginning March 6.
