CLERMONT, Fla. -- NCAA Division II College of Saint Rose (NY) rallied from a three-run deficit and scored eight runs over the fifth and sixth innings to pin a 10-5 loss on University of St. Francis Thursday night as the Saints' softball team continued its spring break trip to central Florida.
The game was played at 9:30 p.m. after overnight and early morning rain showers pushed the daily schedule back at the National Training Center and limited most teams to just one game on the day.
USF took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a run-scoring double by junior third baseman Jenny Festin (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL), an RBI groundout by senior shortstop Lauren Panek (Lemont H.S./Lemont, IL) and the first collegiate hit by freshman catcher Lindsey Rohan (Benet Academy/Naperville, IL).
Saint Rose cam back to score a pair of runs in the top of the third but the Golden Knights did not take the lead until knocking out starting pitcher Jessica Kuester (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S./Homewood, IL) with a five-run fifth. CSR added three more runs in the sixth on a three-run home run by Olivia Reeves.
USF got single runs in the fifth on an RBIU single by Panek and in the seventh on a run-scoring grounder by senior right fielder Kaylee Shell (Wilmington H.S./Wilmington, IL). Panek finished the game with three hits and Festin also had multiple safeties with two.
The Saints continue their trip on Friday with an 8 a.m. start against Urbana University (OH) and a noon encounter with Bellevue University (NE). USF lost to Urbana in 10 innings on Monday and defeated Bellevue on Tuesday.
