ST. LOUIS, Mo. - University of St. Francis sophomore Grant Whybark (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) tied for ninth individually to lead the Saints to an eighth-place finish among 19 teams at the Lindenwood University Fall Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Crescent Farms Golf Course.
The Saints fired a team score of 946 over the 54 holes and placed in the top half of a field that was filled with teams that are traditionally ranked among the top 25 in the NAIA.
Grand View (IA) won the team title and finished 38 strokes ahead of the Saints. USF did manage to beat nemesis St. Ambrose (IA) as the Bees finished tied for ninth, six strokes behind the Saints.
Whybark's 54-hole total of 229 (13-over par) included a second-round score of 4-under par 68. That 68 matched the low round shot by any of the 119 individuals in the field.
Senior Steve Sourigno (Joliet Catholic Academy/Joliet, IL) was next in line for USF with a three-round total of 237. Junior Drew Anderson (Lockport H.S./Lockport, IL) was just one shot behind Sourigno with a total of 238. Sophomore Steve Wojcik (Andrew H.S./Tinley Park, IL) finished with a 242 and freshman Martin Hetelle (Seneca H.S./Seneca, IL) came in with a 248.
USF will send a team to Decatur this coming Friday and Saturday to participate in the Millikin University Invitational.
