CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. — University of St. Francis remained unbeaten but had to settle for a 1-1 tie Tuesday evening in a men's soccer match at Ashford University.
The game was the second half of a women's and men's doubleheader between the two schools and the start was pushed back to approximately 5:50 p.m. due to a 45-minute lightning delay in the women's game. With the late start, the contest was called in the 89th minute due to darkness.
The Saints (1-0-1) got their goal very quickly in the contest as sophomore forward Juan Mascote (Joliet Township H.S./Joliet, IL) took a feed from junior forward Victor Trujillo (De La Salle Institute/Chicago, IL) to score his second goal of the young season.
USF maintained that 1-0 lead until the 66th minute when Mount Mercy's Miguel Perez scored the equalizer.
The Saints had five shots on goal on the match, compared to seven by Mount Mercy. Sophomores Ulises Ornales (Joliet Township H.S./Joliet, IL) and Christian Ontiveros (Bolingbrook H.S./Bolingbrook, IL) each had two and Mascote had the other one on his goal.
Senior goalkeeper Juan Santoliva (Bradley-Bourbonnais H.S./Bourbonnais, IL) made five saves for the Saints.
USF is off until Sept. 9 when it entertains Clarke University (IA) in its home opener at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
