CHICAGO --- Victor Trujillo's third goal in as many games and Juan Santoliva's stellar showing in goal again enabled
The Saints (4-4-2, 1-0-1 CCAC) spotted SXU a 1-0 lead at the 10:11 mark of the opening half, but allowed only two more shots on goal the rest of the night, including just one in the final 91:53.
Saint Xavier's fourth and final shot attempt of the night came at the 49:19 mark as USF's defense held the Cougars (6-3-1, 2-1-1) in check the rest of the night. Santoliva, inserted into the contest at the 21:05 mark, did not allow a goal for the fourth straight game running his streak of scoreless minutes to just under 350.
The Bradley-Bourbonnais High School graduate received plenty of assistance from starting defenders Tony Sallese (Plainfield Central H.S./Plainfield, IL), Michael Kowal (Neuqua Valley H.S./Plainfield, IL), Jordan Parcel (Minooka H.S./Minooka, IL) and Shaun McMillin (Stagg H.S./Hickory Hills, IL), who saw their three-game shutout bid snapped by Ben Johnson in the first half.
Trujillo (De La Salle Institute/Chicago, IL) was the lone Saint to get a shot by three-time CCAC Defensive Player of the Week Ian Pickett when Pickett came out of the goal at the 51:47 mark. Pickett stopped each of USF's ten other shots on goal, including four in the pair of overtimes.
St. Francis, which has only lost once in its last five games, travels to Whiting, Ind. on Tuesday to face CCAC challenger Calumet College of St. Joseph at 3 p.m.
