Freshman placekicker Sean Murray (Shadow Mountain H.S./Phoenix, AZ) was named the NAIA National Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking a pair of field goals to tie and then win the game for University of St. Francis in a 30-27 overtime upset victory Saturday at NCAA FCS Georgia State in the Georgia Dome.
Murray drilled a 31-yard field goal as time expired in regulation to force overtime. After the USF defense denied Georgia State, Murray converted on a 30-yarder to win the game and give the Saints the come-from-behind win.
In addition to the two late field goals, Murray also made a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Saints' first points of the game. He also executed a perfect on-side kick with 1:24 left in regulation to give the Saints the possession they needed to score the tying field goal.
Murray is the second USF player to earn NAIA National Player of the Week honors this season. The Saints have been honored three times in the last five weeks. Sophomore quarterback E.J. White (St. Cloud H.S./St. Cloud, FL) earned the national honor twice for offense after leading USF to wins over then-No. 4-ranked William Penn (36-35) and Haskell Indian Nations (69-6).
Murray was not the lone Saint to be honored after Saturday's upset win. Sophomore running back Anthony Hubert (West Gadsden H.S./Quincy, FL) was named the Midwest League's Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 160 yards on 19 carries to lead the Saints' ground attack. Hubert scored a touchdown on a 42-yard scamper in the fourth quarter that sliced the Georgia State lead to 24-17 and kept the Saints in the game.
The victory helped the Saints (8-2) move back up in the NAIA rankings, improving three spots from No. 16 to No. 13 in this week's Top 25 Coaches' Poll. USF has been as high as No. 9 in the poll this year, reaching that level prior to suffering a 24-21 loss at Grand View two Saturdays ago.
USF has matched its school record for victories in a single season at eight. The Saints close out the regular season this Saturday at noon at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium against No. 17 St. Ambrose. A victory over the Fighting Bees will give USF a share of the Mid-States Football Association/Midwest League championship with the winner of the Grand View-William Penn game that will also be played on Saturday afternoon.
If USF and William Penn both win, the Saints will earn the league's automatic berth into the NAIA Football Championship Series. If USF and Grand View both win, Grand View earns the automatic berth (based on its win over USF) and the Saints will have to wait until Sunday to see if they are awarded an at-large berth.
