JOLIET, Ill. --- University of St. Francis made it a perfect 90's week Saturday night as the Saints racked up 90-plus points for the third time in a row resulting in the Saints' third straight win in the past five days with their 92-61 defeat of Purdue University North Central at the Patrick J. Sullivan Recreation Center.
Sophomore forward Andrew Lerg (DeWitt H.S./DeWitt, MI) held the hot hand on Saturday racking up a career-high six three-pointers two days after hitting four treys in a 90-84 victory over Judson University. Lerg finished with a game-high 22 points going 6-for-9 from three-point range.
Four of Lerg's long-range bombs came in the first half when the Saints opened up a 48-27 lead at the break. A 17-2 run by USF just after the midpoint of the first half propelled the Saints to a 36-15 lead with 4:29 remaining in the half.
Purdue North Central's only serious threat in the second half came right at the beginning when the Panthers (3-18) turned a 52-29 deficit into a 12-point game, 55-43, with 10:31 to play. But just over three minutes later, the Saints had the advantage back up to 25 points, 72-47, in cruising to their fourth victory in the last five games.
Four of Lerg's teammates also reached the 10-point plateau topped by senior center Jordan Lee's (Southeastern Oklahoma State University/Champaign, IL) 14 points off the bench. Seniors Lukas Zebrauskas (Stagg H.S./Palos Heights, IL) and Robbie Butcher (Stagg H.S./Orland Park, IL) added 11 points each, while senior center Eric Chesser (Neuqua Valley H.S./Naperville, IL) collected 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Saints (12-7) opened Saturday's game like they closed Thursday's win over Judson shooting 63 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and finishing at the 53.3 percent mark. They also converted 10-of-21 three-pointers.
USF's hot streak will be put to the test on Tuesday when the Saints travel to the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates to take on NAIA I No. 3-ranked Robert Morris University at 7 p.m. The Eagles are currently 19-1 on the season.
